Editor’s Corner

Dear Mount Observer readers,

This introduction has been long overdue but better now than never. Before I decided to take over as Editor-in-Chief for the spring semester 2023, like many of you, I was a student trying to figure out my path and trying to meet deadlines while also running a household. Not once did I ever think I was ever going to be Editor-in-chief but I’m happy I made the decision.

I started journalism in 2019 while also taking classes for creative writing. As a native of Dorchester, Massachusetts and growing up in a Haitian household, my voice didn’t matter, at least that’s what I was taught. Do as they say and not as I feel.

I have been writing since I was in the 6th grade. My first poetic piece is called “The World”. This piece was derived from a song I wrote. Yes, I wrote songs in middle school hoping to start a girl group. I digress, the assignment was a creative writing piece in plight on 9/11. It was entered into a contest by my 6th teacher at the time and the winners would have their creative writing piece published. As excited as I was, my parents weren’t so excited. I was always told a writing career is not a career because there is no money in it. But I have learned throughout these years, if you’re doing something out of passion, it will align with your happiness. I never fully understood the strength of my words when written on paper, until I found myself immersed in these two courses. It helped reignite the flames behind my passion.

Every semester comes with new faces, new classes, a different environment but also new problems worth being explored and challenged. The Observer is student driven and to me it’s the heart of MWCC because it gives students an opportunity to have their voices heard. Your voice matters. How do you think change occurs?

It’s great to be working with our amazing assistant editor for this semester: Elysian Alder, our contributing editor: Kai Johnson and with our awesome advisor Katie Fuller and our wonderful graphic designer Tom Hill.
