Candace Shivers

A record 106.5 million people watched the 2010 Super Bowl between the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts. Candace Shivers, Associate Professor of Sociology and Human Services at MWCC, was one of these 106.5 million.

Shivers said she has always loved to watch football and sports in general are a big part of her life. Watching football is a passion for Shivers but her favorite thing to do is mix it up on the basketball court. Shivers said she has been playing since she was a freshman at Brockton High School and sees herself playing for many more years.

Shivers loves to play basketball but her fondest memory comes from the sidelines. Starting in 2005, she coached a team of children, ages 8-12, and nothing made her happier than seeing the kids grow and learn to love the game that has been a part of her life for so long. The team came in second place and Shivers said it was great to see how happy the kids were.

"There is nothing like seeing a kid smile," said Shivers.

Being a part of that was a great time for Shivers. She said the only thing that surpasses it in the sporting world was the time the Buffalo Bills played the Houston Oilers in the playoffs. Because the game was blacked out in her area, she and her family had to listen on the radio to her Buffalo Bills and Frank Reich mounting the greatest comeback in NFL history.
