Alyisha Foley, 24, who started working at the Mount in February, is the new professional writing tutor for the school's Vision's program.

According to Foley, the Vision's program exists for a variety of reasons, like providing students with the opportunity to earn scholarships and grants and giving advice about educational direction and college processes.

Dane Wetmore, 20, has been a familiar face in the halls of MWCC for 3 years of study. In fact, Wetmore is finishing his third year at the Mount this semester and will soon be moving on to the final year of his studies to earn a bachelor's degree in the 3+1 program at Nichols College in Dudley, MA.

Ed Edgecombe, 20, is finishing his first year in the Nichols/MWCC 3 Plus ONE Business program. He currently takes his classes at the Mount, but next year he is thinking of taking some classes at Quinsigamond Community College.

He said his original plan was to save money by just getting his Associate's degree at the Mount, then transferring to another school.

2010 Literary Magazine Debuts and Gets a Makeover

On April 28, several Mount students got together in the Commons area at the Mount's Gardner campus to celebrate and listen to poetry from the new literary magazine that just came out.

"We are here to celebrate this new magazine," said Michelle Valois, professor of English and advisor to the magazine.

Alpha Beta Gamma Inducts Thirty Six New Members

On April 16, Mount Wachusett Community Colleges Chi Gamma Chapter of Alpha Beta Gamma (ABG) introduced 36 new members. Just as impressive, the national Business Honor Society for Community, Technical and Junior College students celebrated its 20th anniversary on the campus.

Art Club Exhibits New Sculptures Every Few Weeks

Every two weeks, the Art Club decides on a new material to make sculptures for an exhibit, and anyone in the college can create a sculpture to participate.

Materials range from tinfoil to steel wool to dryer lint. Students interested in making a sculpture out of the selected material can bring a sculpture in and put it in the section of the gallery reserved for the sculpture project.

C.A.T.S. Holds Pizza Night for Evening Students

On April 26, C.A.T.S. (Campus Activity Team for Students) held a pizza night for evening students at the Mount's Gardner Campus.

The event was between 5 to 6 p.m. but the 14 pizza's for students attending class that night were gone by 5:30 p.m.

Graphic Design Competition Gets Record Turn Out

Graphic Design majors Madeleine Plaut and Noah Chicoine accepted Best in Show awards on April 22, for their respective categories in the 2010 Graphic Design Exhibit and Competition in front of a record crowd of more than 85 people. The winning pieces were selected from a pool of approximately 235 print and 60 web entries contributed by students majoring in Graphic Design at the Mount.

Honors Program Celebrates 20th Anniversary

Mount Wachusett Community College Honors Program recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. 20 years ago the program was originally initiated by President Daniel M. Asquino and with the help of Tom Malloy, the program's first coordinator; a committee was established to conclude the criteria for the program.

Local residents recently reported a fishing attempt operating in our area. Residents stated that they were receiving calls on their cell phone, from an automated voice, and that the call was coming from their "local financial institution'. The caller stated that the person was receiving the call due to their debit card being compromised.

Professor Gelbwasser to Retire after Forty Five Years on the Job

Once the summer sessions are over so will be the 45 year career of Professor Herman Gelbwasser. According to Gelbwasser, who started August 29, 1965, it is time for him to begin enjoying the rest of his life.
Gelbwasser's specialty has been chemistry, but he also taught a variety of math courses.
