MWCC to host a Financial Literacy Fair on October 24th

By Meghan Doyle

Mount Wachusett Community College will host a financial literacy fair on October 24 in the Gardner campus commons area. The fair is free for all students and will cover a variety of topics, such as tips on building budgeting habits and establishing good credit

The program stresses the importance of financial literacy in both school and life. The workshops on federal student loans and the financial aid process can help individuals understand the ins and outs of comprehending college finances while other workshops, such as dealing with credit cards and budgeting are ubiquitous in everyday life, affirms the financial aid office. Students are encouraged to pre-register online to reserve their seats at mwcc.edu/financialaid.

Along with becoming more financially adept, students who attend also have the chance to win a $75 Mount Wachusett scholarship simply by attending any of the workshops. Another lucky student will walk away with the door prize, a free three credit class which is over $700 in value, according to a posting by the financial aid office. Students will have the opportunity to choose what particular areas they are interested in learning about as the program is broken into multiple 30-minute-long workshops, running from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

“All students could benefit by attending the workshops because it’s about dealing with life and money, something that all of us have to learn to deal with effectively,” Michelle Blakeney-Couture of the financial aid office explained. “Because of the wide selection of workshops available, I would encourage everyone to attend.”

This is a SALT driven program, run by Mount Wachusett Community College and partnered with American Student Assistance. SALT is an additional free program available for students to get advice on being financially responsible. There will be a workshop at the fair on the SALT program itself for those interested in learning more.

The sessions will also be live-streamed at the Leominster campus for those who cannot make it to Gardner. For more information about what workshops will be available, contact the financial aid office in room 164 on the Gardner campus or visit the website for a detailed list.
